Sport Excellence Education (spexEducation) Undergraduate Scholarship
On 15 April, the inaugural batch of 12 athletes was awarded the Sport Excellence Education (spexEducation) Undergraduate Scholarship — nine on the Dual Career track and three on the New Career track. First announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in 2024, this Scholarship was introduced to support the academic aspirations of Team Singapore athletes and enhance their long-term employability.
Among the Dual Career recipients are Zeanne Law (Wushu) and Sheik Farhan (Pencak Silat), who will continue to represent Singapore at the highest levels while pursuing their undergraduate studies. On the New Career track, former national shuttler Jessica Tan, who recently retired to resume her studies in sport management, and swimmer Teong Tzen Wei, a celebrated name in Singapore sports, exemplify how athletes can transition successfully while continuing to contribute to the sporting community.
Beyond the spexEducation awards, seven athletes across six sports were newly inducted into the Sport Excellence Scholarship (spexScholarship) programme, and 26 athletes across 15 sports joined the Sport Excellence Potential (spexPotential) programme. To further strengthen the ecosystem, the Singapore Sports School and six Autonomous Universities (AUs) also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to reinforce athlete-friendly practices and bolster support for carded student-athletes in achieving both sporting and academic excellence.
These developments build upon recent initiatives to deepen holistic support for athletes, including:
Enhanced financial support: Increased stipends and monthly CPF top-ups for spexScholars starting from FY2025.
Institutional integration: The Singapore Sport Institute (SSI) and National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI) are being merged into the new High Performance Sport Institute (HPSI).
Future-ready infrastructure: The development of Home of Team Singapore at the Kallang Alive precinct.
Together, these efforts aim to nurture a new generation of sport specialists in sport science, athlete life development, and sport management, while giving Team Singapore athletes the assurance of strong educational support alongside their sporting pursuits.
